Agostino Carracci, Pluto, galleria e Museo Estense, Módena

The head of Medusa

La cabeza de Medusa
(Testa di Medusa)
Caravaggio, 1597

In Greek myth, Perseus used the severed snake-haired head of the Gorgon Medusa as a shield with to turn his enemies to stone. By the sixteenth century Medusa was said to simbolize the triumph of reason over the senses; and this may hava been why Cardinal Del Monte commissioned Caravaggio to paint Medusa as the figure on a cerimonial shield presented in 1601. Caravaggio painted two versions of, Medusa the first in 1596 and the other presumably in 1597. The first version, also known as Murtula, by the name of the poet who wrote about it  is signed Michel A F and is in private hands; the second version, shown here, is slightly bigger and is not signed; it is held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

El dios Júpiter

Rosenau castle.

Venus had two aspects: she was an earthly goddess who aroused humans to physical love or she was a heavenly goddess who inspired intellectual love in them.
Plato further argued that contemplation of physical beauty allowed the mind to better understand spiritual beauty. So, looking at Venus, the most beautiful of goddesses, might at first raise a physical response in viewers which then lifted their minds towards the Creator.

In the Birth of Venus, Venus' body is anatomically improbable, with elongated neck and torso. The bodies and poses of the winds to the left are even harder to figure out. The background is summary, and the figures cast no shadows. It is clear that this is a fantasy image.
El nacimiento de Venus, Botticelli

                         Of august gold-wreathed and beautiful
Aphrodite I shall sing to whose domain
belong the battlements of all sea-loved
Cyprus where, blown by the moist breath
of Zephyros, she was carried over the
waves of the resounding sea on soft foam.
                         The gold-filleted Horae happily welcomed
her and clothed her with heavenly raiment.

So, listen to the videos and  let´s try practising some Spanish!
